Oahu Travel Logistics
When’s the best time to go to Hawaii? Holidays and spring break weeks will always be the busiest and fill up the quickest. If you don’t need to plan around school breaks, here are some things to consider.
Winter (Nov–Feb): whale watching + epic North Shore waves
Spring (Mar–May): fewer crowds, ideal weather
Summer (Jun–Aug): calm water, peak family energy
Fall (Sep–Oct): warm, quiet, underrated
Getting Around: While you can enjoy Aulani without ever leaving the resort, I recommend renting a car for at least half the trip to comfortably explore Oʻahu at your own pace.
Overnight parking at Aulani is $40 per night (unless you’re a DVC member, then there is no cost), and families who prefer a hands-off arrival can opt for paid airport shuttle or private car services instead of driving.
Where to Stay
Aulani is one of the best family resorts on Oʻahu because it blends luxury, culture, and ease in a way few places do.With expansive pool areas, a swimmable lagoon, included kids’ activities, and elevated dining, it removes the friction from traveling with children—while still feeling refined and intentional. It’s a true home base, not just a hotel.

Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands. Great for breakfast or dinner, with a character breakfast option that’s especially fun early in the trip.

The Perfect Oahu Itinerary
Rather than break this up like Day 1, Day 2, etc, I’m going to list out excusisons and day trips, then you can mix then up however you’d like. Think of it like a buffet. You can take as many day trips as you’d like that fits your family, and sprinkle in as much rest and resort/spa time as you need. That will make this vacation truly custom and memorable.
🌊 NORTH SHORE DAY
The North Shore is one of those places that instantly feels like real Hawaiʻi—wild beaches, surf culture, and a slower pace that’s a refreshing contrast to resort life. This is an easy, rewarding explore day that doesn’t require a rigid schedule and works beautifully with kids of all ages.
Things to do:
Drive along the North Shore Oʻahu and stop at scenic beaches like Waimea Bay or Sunset Beach
Wander Haleʻiwa Town for casual shopping and lunch
Grab shave ice at Matsumoto Shave Ice 🍧
Optional stop at Dole Plantation for some pineapples on the way back.
Good to know:
This day doesn’t require reservations, which makes it great to plan once you’re on the island. Winter months are best for watching world-class surf, while summer brings calmer water and easier beach time. Aim to start earlier in the day to avoid peak lunch lines in Haleʻiwa.
🇺🇸 🌋 SOUTH SHORE DAY (or two)
This day highlights Oʻahu’s natural beauty in a really striking way—volcanic landscapes, sweeping views, and some of the island’s best snorkeling. It’s an active but incredibly rewarding option, especially for families who want a true “only in Hawaiʻi” experience.
This day is all about choosing what excites your family most—history, hiking, snorkeling, or city wandering. Everything here is close together, which makes it easy to mix and match the experiences that your family would enjoy the most. If ALL of these sound fun (and you’re not wrong if you think that 😉), then take 2 days and enjoy it all.
This works best as a one-focus day rather than trying to do everything at once. If you choose a more active option, plan a quieter evening back at the resort. This is a meaningful, high-impact day that combines powerful history with classic city energy. It’s often one of the most memorable days of the trip, especially for families who value educational experiences alongside sightseeing.
Reservations are required for Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Hanauma Bay, and booking in advance is essential—especially during peak seasons.
Things to do:
Visit Pearl Harbor (USS Arizona, USS Missouri, or museums)
Spend time in Waikiki
Beach walk or swim
High-end luxury and market shopping
Honolulu Zoo or Waikiki Aquarium
Hike Diamond Head for panoramic views of Waikiki and the coastline
Snorkel at Hanauma Bay, a protected 101-acre nature preserve formed by ancient volcanic eruptions
Spot colorful fish and marine life in calm, shallow waters—ideal for confident beginner snorkelers
Good to know:
USS Arizona tickets should be booked 2–4 weeks in advance, and an early start makes the day far more enjoyable. This is a full day with more walking and listening, so it’s best for school-aged kids and up. Plan a quieter evening back at the resort afterward.
Diamond Head is best tackled early in the morning before the heat sets in, and reservations are required for both the hike and Hanauma Bay. Hanauma Bay limits daily visitors to protect the reef, so planning ahead is essential. This day works best for school-aged kids and up, and it’s smart to keep the evening low-key afterward.
🐎 KUALOA RANCH
Kualoa Ranch delivers one of the biggest “wow” moments on Oʻahu, with dramatic landscapes that feel worlds away from the beach. It’s an excellent choice for families who want adventure, open space, and something truly different from resort or city days. Be prepared to recognize this ranch nearly every time you turn on TV (not really, but it feels like it)
Things to do:
Visit Kualoa Ranch
Choose from guided experiences like:
ATV or UTV tours
Horseback riding
Movie & TV filming locations (Lost, Jurassic Park, Jumanji and hundreds more)
Good to know:
Reservations are required and should be booked in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Most families treat this as a half-day adventure and return to Aulani for pool or beach time afterward. It’s a great balance of excitement without overfilling the day.
🌺 AULANI RESORT DAYS
Aulani is the kind of place you actually want to linger. Between the swimmable lagoon, expansive pools, ocean views, cultural experiences, and effortless service, building in resort days means you can make it as exciting or relaxing as you want it to be.
Kids have endless ways to play and explore, while parents enjoy true resort-level luxury in one of the most beautiful settings on earth, making these days just as memorable as any island adventure.
Things to do at the resort:
Pools, lazy river, and lagoon time: Multiple pool areas and a calm swimmable lagoon mean kids can play safely while adults relax nearby.
Character experiences: Disney characters appear in relaxed, island-style settings without the pressure of theme park schedules.
Aunty’s Beach House (kids club): Complimentary, supervised activities for ages 4–12 give kids independence and parents built-in downtime.
Daily activities and cultural programming: Crafts, games, movie nights, animation classes, and Hawaiian cultural experiences run throughout the day.
Beach rentals and water fun: Snorkel gear, paddleboards, boogie boards, and loungers are available right on property.
Spa time at Laniwai: A full-service spa and Kula Wai, Oʻahu’s only outdoor hydrotherapy garden. With soaking pools, rain showers, and whirlpool spas, it’s an easy way to unwind while kids are busy at Aunty’s Beach House or resort activities nearby.
Access to the hydrotherapy garden is included with any spa treatment, and reservations are required. This is a great option for a resort day or the afternoon before your lū‘au, when slowing down feels especially good.
Good to know:
These are the most flexible days of the trip and perfect for adjusting around energy levels, naps, or early nights. You can do a lot—or almost nothing—and still feel like you’re getting full value from the experience. Many families say these are the days they remember most.
🌺 KA WA‘A – A LŪ‘AU AT AULANI
This is the natural finale to the week and one of the most meaningful experiences on the island. KA WA‘A blends Hawaiian history, music, and storytelling with Disney-level production into an evening that feels celebratory and deeply memorable.
Things to expect:
Pre-show cultural demonstrations and activities
A buffet-style island feast with kid-friendly options
A full lū‘au performance that brings Hawaiian legends to life
Good to know:
Reservations are absolutely required and often sell out well in advance, so this should be booked very early. Many families plan their explore days around this night so they can fully enjoy it without feeling rushed. It’s a beautiful way to close the trip and reflect on everything you experienced together.
TIPS & TRICKS
Pack reef-safe sunscreen (and more than you think). Hawaiʻi requires reef-safe sunscreen, and while you can buy it on the island, it’s pricier and not always your favorite brand. Bring hats, rash guards, and water shoes to make beach and lagoon time easier for kids.
Request your room location thoughtfully. When booking Aulani, request a room closer to the pools and lagoon if you plan to spend most of your time outdoors, or a quieter location if midday naps or early bedtimes matter.
Book the “hard” things first. Experiences like KA WA‘A – A Lū‘au, Pearl Harbor tickets, Diamond Head, and Hanauma Bay all require advance reservations and can sell out. Lock these in early, then let the rest of the trip stay flexible.
Use resort days strategically. Plan resort-heavy days after explore days to avoid burnout. These are perfect for sleeping in, slow breakfasts, pool hopping, and letting kids choose the pace.
Don’t skip the casual food options. Quick-service spots and grab-and-go meals are clutch on pool days or late afternoons. They’re easy, kid-friendly, and help avoid overcommitting to sit-down dinners every night.
Use the Aulani app to plan your days. View daily activities, check character appearances, book dining and spa appointments, and see what’s happening around the resort in real time. It’s the easiest way to stay flexible without missing out—Cast Members are always happy to help, but the app lets you plan on your own schedule.
Bring a small day bag for explore days. Pack water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and swimsuits so you’re always ready to pivot plans—especially when combining beaches, sightseeing, and lunch stops.
Plan one “nothing” afternoon. Even the most exciting itinerary benefits from one unscheduled stretch. Whether that’s the lagoon, a long pool afternoon, or a sunset walk, this is often when families say the trip really sinks in.
Is an Aulani Resort Vacation the Right Trip for Your Family??
An Aulani vacation is a great fit for families who want to experience Hawaiʻi without turning the trip into a logistics puzzle. If your family loves a balance of culture, nature, comfort, and ease (and you want your time and money to feel well spent), this is one of the most seamless ways to do Hawaiʻi with kids. Using Aulani as your home base gives you the freedom to explore Oʻahu at your own pace—or stay put and enjoy the resort—without feeling like you’re missing out either way.
